5 Garden Hacks

Everything from fungus control to making use of obvious household items, here are The Grow Guide’s Top 5 Garden Hacks to remember.

Propagating Tray - place a piece of felt material under the module tray, but in between the rectangular tray. This will keep your propagation tray moist (yeah we said moist), so you can get away with watering it less! The felt stores additional water and holds the temperature of the propagating tray.

Cinnamon - Since we’re talking about things being moist, if you’re noticing the soil around your seedlings are developing fungus or spores, it is usually absolutely fine but it may mean that the soil is too damp. So sprinkle some Cinnamon over the soil. Cinnamon has anti fungal properties, and will take some of the moisture out of the soil.

Water Canister - On the topic of hydration, if you can’t reach the shops, no problem. Re-use an old plastic bottle or milk bottle. Carefully pierce some holes in the lid of the bottle with a hot sewing needle. Fill the bottle with water, screw the lid back on and you have a homemade watering can.

Egg Shells - Make use of your egg shells. They are great for your wormery, for providing you plants additional calcium and they are useful for keeping slugs away. Save them, wash and bake them, and then grind them up either in the blender or a coffee grinder (we like to use a coffee grinder bought specifically for our egg shells). We don’t always wash and bake them, we just let them dry out completely. Then we get sprinkling!

Pencil / Trowels - Our home tends to have less pens and pencils every year. So if you’re struggling to find one, I will often go to the kitchen draw and find a spoon. Yeah, I said a spoon. You don’t need to go out to buy an elaborate pricking tool. Use a teaspoon to ‘prick’ out your seedling or to dig a hole. Money saved.

So those are some of our favourite Grow Guide gardening hacks. They are really simple, and you are likely to have many of the objects and foods in your home.
