Five of Our Favourite Ways to be Eco-Friendly

It’s important for us to be eco-friendly outside of the office too.

Here’s a 5 things we like to do.

1. Minimalism

Minimal but comfortable is the key. When I’ve seen minimalism online, people give up sofas and bed frames in the name of minimalism. I don’t think that’s necessary. When shopping for something new, asking yourself whether you need it — is it functional? Will it get used? Is it a trend or is it timeless? Will it bring joy?

Having a clear space where I know where everything is, not only is it good for the environment but productivity too.

Don’t remove comfort for the sake of a minimalism. But strike a balance.

2. Upcycle / Fix

If it’s broken, fix it. Just the other day my partner was going to throw out a pair of socks that had a hole in it. I said pass it here, and I sewed it back together. Firstly, in his words, that’s real love, and secondly we just saved a pair of socks heading to landfill unnecessarily. Honestly back to new.

Just think, can it have another life?

3. Fashion / Clothing: Reduce Plastic and Use Natural Materials

This is something we all ought to be mindful of.

Fabrics that are made from polyester, acrylic, viscose or nylon don’t have the best impact on our environment.

If you can, opt for organic cotton, hemp, linen or recycled fabric options.

Natural materials will biodegrade over time, materials made from plastic release mirco-plastics over time, and the main garment struggles to break down once it gets to landfill.

4. Plastic Free Weeks

This is something we have spoken about before on the Journal. I like to challenge myself to a week of not buying anything covered in plastic. If it’s covered in plastic, or has a plastic wrapping of any sort I can’t pick it up.

We’ve pulled together a list of our favourite Bulk Food Shops / Zero Waste Stores (head to our Instagram).

5. Wormery

At the back of The Grow Guide HQ we have a worm bin, we throw our food waste there. We create our own fertiliser, and avoid food waste.
