Must Have Gardening Tools

Here’s a list of our must have gardening tools to get started.

Now, this is by no means the ‘advanced’ list. This is just the basics, that we feel will get you on the right footing.

Seed Propagator Tray (with a lid).

  • This is useful to get a head start on your seeds. It’s an incubator to keep your seeds at a good temperature for germination. Many of these are plastic, so we’d encourage you to look after them so they can be re-used, year after year.

A Spray Bottle

  • Hydration is key.

A Pencil

  • You’ll probably have this in your home, but it’s a useful tool for ‘pricking’ seedlings out of the propagation tray.

Labels

  • One of the most important items on this list, unless you like surprises…
Label your trays, and when your seedlings are ready to move on to bigger spaces, label their new homes as well. Seedlings can look very similar at the beginning, and you probably don’t want to mix up chilli peppers with sweet peppers.

Things for later in your gardening journey.

  • Pots

    • Useful to have when you need to move plants on to bigger spaces. I like to buy a range of sizes, to avoid shocking the plant with a space thats too large for it.

  • Gloves

    • Grubby gardening hands is sometimes the look on Instagram. But I find that soil can dry out my hands and it get under nails (even if you keep your nails short), so gloves are useful for keeping your hands clean, some plants are also prickly so having gloves to hand can be useful for when you are moving or picking.

  • Trowel

    • A great tool for moving plants from one area to another, or removing them completely from your pot, trug or plot.

  • Watering Can

    • No explanation needed. This is especially useful if you don’t have access to a watering hose.

  • Gardening Scissors

    • Great for cutting leaves, to encourage growth. And of course great when for when you’re ready to get cooking, and you need something from your garden.
